~For awhile, there's panic, mostly because of the lack of government and the armies headed towards France. Radical journalists like Marat were causing trouble. People were worried about prisoners escaping from overcrowded cells and becoming a counterrevolutionary force. So, Parisians invaded the prisons and slaugtered 2000 prisoners-September Massacres.
~Now, the National Convention split into (basically) two factions: | Girondins]] - advocated provisional liberty and laissez-faire economics. (In class, we labeled them as the "Let's not carry this revolution thing any further than France" group)
and Jacobins-They were more militant, more focused on taking bold measures to control the revolution in times of crisis (In class, we labeled them as the "Revolution is super-duper! Let's spread it all around Europe and get rid of those kings!" group)
(By the way, there were also these others who said, "Let's kill the King, but don't expand the Revolution")
I don't mean to spoil the ending for you, but...they kill the king (poor Louis!!)
By the spring of 1783, the National Convention faced:
~A new Austrian and Prussian offensive (with new allies-Spain, Piedmont, and Britain)
~Rebellions in western france and the Vendee region
~And, economic crisis due to inflation caused by the assignats and poor harvests.
Now, we've got these sans-culottes (tradesmen who were just wild about the revolution) They were obsessed with the price of bread, and with displaying anti-aristocratic attitudes in everyday behavior.
But, basically, things get bad here. The Jacobins purge the National Convention of Girondins. Then, they create this awesome new constitution, but they set it aside because they felt that they needed a stronger government to deal with the chaos. They created the Committee of Public Safety (a 12-man ruling body-Robespierre was the leader). And this is where the Reign of Terror (they basically went crazy trying to rid the country of all counter-revolutionary forces, which ended up involving killing tons of people and suppressing rights) began.
Then, from 1793-1794, France has some military victories and things cooled off a bit.
